Silicone breast implants and breast augmentation procedures are commonly performed at our three Connecticut locations in New Haven, Shelton, and Norwalk. For many years, silicone implants were thought to present a greater risk of immunological disorders over saline implants. However, after fourteen years researching the safety of silicone implants, in 2006 the FDA found no connection between this particular type of implant and any type of disease.

In fact, many doctors and patients prefer silicone because the look and feel of these implants is more natural than saline. Silicone, in general, is considered to be more like real breast tissue, the implants filled with a polymeric gel of the element silicon, which is a naturally occurring element of which we all have small amounts in our bodies.

In the case of rupture, the gel remains in the pocket your body creates around the implant and is not dangerous. In fact, silicone breast implant ruptures are often referred to as “silent,” as they may not even be noticeable by eye. For this reason, the FDA recommends an occasional MRI to detect whether or not the implants have ruptured.

Silicone breast implants can be inserted either above or below the muscle, depending upon the patient’s body type, desired results, and unique circumstances. For women looking to boost self-confidence or enhance self-image, add fullness or a more youthful appearance, silicone breast implants may be the answer.
